“This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live through him. This is the kind of love we are talking about—not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they’ve done to our relationship with God.” 1 John 4:9-10
God’s love is a hard thing to wrap our minds around. After all, we humans can have a pretty skewed notion of what it means to love someone. We try to quantify and qualify love, and sometimes we end up feeling inadequate. Do we love enough? Or do we love too much?
The beautiful thing is, we never have to worry about that with God. Even if we’re feeling like we can’t possibly love Him like He deserves, the Word tells us we don’t have to – it isn’t about how much we love Him, it’s about how much He loves us!
He knows that in our limited capacities we could never love Him adequately. He’s just too big, and too good, of a God, and, well, we’re only human. But look at that verse again:
“This is the kind of love we are talking about—not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they’ve done to our relationship with God.”
We don’t have that kind of capacity for love, and we certainly don’t have anything that valuable to sacrifice to Him. But, as we’re wrapping up the holidays and focusing on the year ahead, let’s make it our aim to love Him with all we have anyway – it’s the least we can do after what He did for us.
Oh, how He loves us!
