I am a very, very light sleeper. More nights than not, I sleep with earplugs to help drown out the little noises that get on my nerves and keep me from going to sleep.
In other words, drowning out distractions.
Sometimes, we need spiritual earplugs. You know, those times when the distractions of life get to be too much and you can’t hear from God for all the noise.
How do we get it? The Psalmist wrote:
“I’m asking God for one thing, only one thing: To live with him in his house my whole life long. I’ll contemplate his beauty; I’ll study at his feet.
That’s the only quiet, secure place in a noisy world, The perfect getaway,
far from the buzz of traffic.” Psalm 27:4-5
We can’t spend all our time in church, but we can make a sanctuary where we are. Maybe it’s your bedroom, or your living room before anyone else wakes up. Maybe it’s your car as you commute to work.
Maybe you’re like a friend of mine, a stay-at-home-mom of four small children, including an infant, who homeschools her brood. She locks herself in the bathroom to get alone with God!
No matter where or when, we all need distraction-free time to hear from the Father. Do you know where your spiritual earplugs are?

I use them often, along with my skull candy to drown out physical ones! Excellent post. Sometimes, you can’t even hide in the bathroom, finger come sticking out from under the door, wiggling for attention. We also need blinders to go with those earplugs! LOL

I have to wear earplug sometimes too…like last night when snowplows growled through the street over and over. Yes, I’m thankful they were up in the middle of the night making roads drive-able…but I was thankful, too, for the earplugs. 🙂
My “spiritual earplugs” are most often worn in the morning…5 a.m….my God and me time. I’m not all that lovely of a person without that quiet time! 🙂
