“Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” Romans 12:2

There’s a word that’s bandied about a lot these days, especially when it comes to our children: desensitized. It means that things that should bother us, don’t anymore, because we’ve become so accustomed to them.

We can become desensitized to suffering, to violence, or to abuse from those around us. Unfortunately, we can also become so desensitized to sin that we don’t even recognize it anymore. Our conscience becomes what my mother would call “seared” until we can’t hear the pleadings of the Holy Spirit to change how we are living.

There is but one cure for this sad development: fixing our mind on God, on things from above and not things of this world. A strange thing will begin to happen: when we meditate on His Word, we will be able to discern right from wrong again. We will be able to hear the Spirit’s call to change our lives, and respond in obedience. It won’t take someone with a rule book threatening us with eternal damnation. Just spending time with the Savior makes us want to please Him.

Don’t be drug down to the level of the world around you. Set your thought Heavenward and spend time studying God’s word. Let your heart be pricked again for the sin and suffering you see around you. Let your conscience be convicted to make some changes. Be humble, not prideful, in your introspection. Don’t try to fit in, but let the Holy Spirit guide you into God’s truth and His perfect plan for your life.
