“Delight yourself in the LORD,  and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4

When I was younger, I thought (and had heard it preached) that Psalm 37:4 was about me getting what I wanted. It was like a magic formula to success: Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Sounds simple and straightforward,  right?

Wrong. It goes much deeper than just “things.” Yes, God loves us and wants us to have good things, but He is much more interested in the condition of our hearts and souls. He wants to give us our hearts desires. He wants the cry of our heart to be the cry of his heart.

Do you want revenge? He wants to give you mercy. How about your “right to be right?” He wants to teach you how to let it go. Selfishness your thing? He wants you to learn to be selfless. What is utmost in His mind is our becoming more like Him.

What is your heart’s desire today? Is it making you more like Him? If not, I pray that you will begin to seek Him and live to please Him. He will bring out those qualities in you that He most desire to see.
