There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:1-12
I love a good mystery, whether on film or in a book. The best ones have plot twists that I never see coming. The bad ones – well, I can have those figured out before the middle of the story!
The story of Jesus’ birth is full of the unexpected: an unexpected pregnancy in a unsuspecting young girl; an unexpected trip to an unfamiliar town; an unexpected announcement to some unassuming shepherds.
Everything these people thought they knew about the coming of Messiah turned on its head.
Today, He brings unexpected hope to the hopeless, unexpected peace to those in turmoil, and unexpected joy to the sorrowful among us.
Mary didn’t expect to be a virgin mother. Joseph didn’t expect to have to take that long journey to Bethlehem with a very pregnant bride. The shepherds didn’t expect an angel chorus to send them to find a baby in a feeding trough – a baby that would save mankind.
He wants to do something unexpected in your life today. Open your heart to Him, and get ready! One unexpected moment can change everything.
