“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13
Yesterday was Valentine’s Day. For weeks and weeks and – likely since December 26 – we’ve been inundated with hearts and messages about what the world thinks love is. All of the ads and store displays try to convince us that we can only show someone we care about them if we buy candy and expensive gifts. Otherwise, we don’t really love them.
Jesus tried to give His disciples “hints” about what was about to happen at Calvary. He was trying to prepare them – even if they didn’t pick up what He was putting down. In John 15 He told them what real love looks like – and it sure wasn’t candy hearts or jewelry. He was telling His closest confidantes that what He was going to go through was because of His great love for them – for us.
No greater love. Lay down his life. He did it all for us, even before we were born. That is what real love looks like.
I pray that, whether you had an earthly Valentine or not, that His love will fill you – overwhelm you today.
