For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. “These seven are the eyes of the Lord , which range through the whole earth.” Zechariah 4:10

Several years ago, I was involved with a community organization which was given a grant. The aim was to improve the health of children in the area. One of the towns in our district had built a park, but there were no shade trees and the equipment became too hot to use. Partnering with our local 4H club, we arranged to have several trees planted with the funds.

Now, I knew we could not afford towering cedars! But those saplings looked like little help against the Mississippi sun. As I have driven past the park in the ensuing years, I have seen them take root and grow. They may not be up to their full shade potential, but they are certainly on their way.

We tend to despise the small beginnings in our own lives too. Whether it’s our spiritual walk, our jobs, or our health, we have to start somewhere! And just like in the Old Testament story of the rebuilding of the temple,  we will eventually see results. We will be able to rejoice, like the Israelites,  when the saplings in our lives become what God intended.

Are you just starting out, and it seems like you have too far to go? Are you watching a loved one in the infancy stage of getting their life on track? Don’t give up, and don’t lose hope. One day those small beginnings will show their full potential, and we will all be able to rejoice in Him.
