“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

There is a buzz around the neighborhood. All exterior appearances show something is going on, but there is no sign of what is happening inside. Everyone waits in anticipation to see the final result, knowing that the big reveal is sure to be worth the mystery.

I’m describing the mysterious renovation of a former chain restaurant I pass each day, but I could just as easily be talking about any one of us as Christ works in our lives.

Sure, there are some outward signs when we take up our cross and follow Him. Our habits change. Our outlook changes. We may even exhibit an outward glow. But the real work is being done inside.

As we let Him take over our hearts, little by little, big changes are happening. Walls are being torn down as He mends past hurts. New rooms are added to accommodate new levels of faith, hope, and love. Sparkling clean windows let His light shine out into a dark world.

Yes, in Christ, we are under new management, and we will be a renovation in progress until we reach Heaven. Our friends and neighbors see the outside changing, but the real payoff comes when the inside begins to show through. It’s then that His investment in us begins to pay real dividends, as we see the Kingdom grow. Trust me, the reveal will be worth the hard work of letting Him have His way in our hearts.
