“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
My family leads a very busy life. At least two nights per week, it’s close to 10 pm when we arrive home. Sunday, we are usually gone all day too. I try to clean the house on Friday evenings (when we get home earlier) so that I can relax and enjoy my Saturday!
You would think that, with us being gone all the time, the house wouldn’t get cluttered much during the week. But you would be wrong! Even now, there is a dishwasher that needs emptied of clean dishes so the dirty ones in the sink can be loaded. There are clean clothes on the back of my couch waiting to be put away. And let’s not even talk about the dirty clothes piling up needing to be washed!
Obviously, we have not done a good job of maintenance cleaning this week. If we don’t do a little each day, the small things pile up and become big things – quickly!
Our spiritual lives work the same way. We all have garbage that piles up in our soul:sin. None of us is immune, and even as we walk with Christ, we will stumble. It might not be big, blatant things, but attitudes of the heart wr need to be forgiven of. If we don’t confess our sins on a regular basis, the refuse will begin to pile up – and then, oh boy, will we begin to smell!
Take some time for a soul assessment today. Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart and show you what needs cleaning out. Ask Jesus to make your heart squeaky clean again. You might be surprised at the gunk that had accumulated there that you hadn’t even noticed. Let’s not be too busy to clean our homes, or our hearts!
