“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” Hebrews 12:1

My daughter and I were watching a Christian music awards show, and the hosts were naming off secular music artists to make the point that they began their singing careers in church.

“They started in church?” my daughter asked.

Teachable moment alert!

Yes, I told her, many people start out in church. Unfortunately,  not everyone finishes there.

This is not a commentary on the spiritual lives of those musicians – I am not privy to that information. But what I can tell you is something you have observed if you have been serving God for very long: sometimes, people give up on Him. Even though He never gives up on us!

There is a reason that God’s word refers to life as a race and uses words like endurance (more than once) to describe the Christian walk. It’s hard. It’s long.  It’s easy to give up. But it isn’t impossible, as evidenced as all those who have done it before!

Start out with Jesus. Finish with Jesus. Even if you have to slow down,  keep going. Finish what you started!
