“I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me.” Phil. 3:12
God knew what He was doing when His Holy Spirit compelled us to come to a saving faith. His holy intent is our perfection – another way of saying it is completion – in Him.
And yet, He also knew that we would never achieve that perfection here on earth.
Sounds like a paradox, doesn’t it?
But here’s the thing: He also knew that it was in the striving that we would become more like Him. It’s the striving towards our goal that keeps us going, even in impossible circumstances. Living for Him on earth isn’t always easy. We live in a broken world. But the goal ahead of us gives us the wherewithal to keep going.
No, contrary to what some people might think of themselves, we will never be perfect, or complete in Christ, until we reach Heaven. But if we know that finish line is God’s intent for us, we can keep our eyes on Him until we reach it.
